The New York Medal – My 50 State Medal Pursuit

When I started the 50-state medal pursuit project, I had my eye on Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York specifically. I grew up in Pennsylvania. With that, New Jersey and New York were the states I visited the most until I moved to Florida. Because of that, I have a desire to bring home medals from the area of the country I grew up in.

Today, I can add New York to my state medal list! I entered three beers in UNYHA’s 45th Annual Homebrew Competition. The Upper New York Homebrewers Association holds the competition. The beers I entered were my Scottish Export, Barrel Age Marzen, and Belgian Pale Ale.

I won two gold medals in this competition! One for my Scottish Export and one for my Belgian Pale Ale. My barrel-aged Marzen didn’t score very well, and I’m unsurprised. That beer started as a Rauchbier that didn’t have enough smoke character that I tried to balance out and alter with some bourbon and American oak.

New York is my 8th state in my 50-state pursuit, and I still have one more out-of-state competition in 2023. I’m going to do some digging and see if I can enter any more this year and possibly, with any luck, end the year with 1/5 of the pursuit complete.

Cheers!
